My very first act of great heroism

It was the 14th April and I sat on the aircraft from Sydney to Auckland. I still suffered from the shock which I experienced at Singapore when the Airplane was shaken by heavy turbulences and I imagined how a rescue team would picked the remaining pieces of my body up out of the pacific.

However, I tried to relax a little bit. “Just twice more reasons for being afraid (departure and landing) and then I finally would be able to enjoy my nine months in New Zealand”, I thought while the captain was starting the engine. During the start I tried to peer out of the window to calm myself down but the annoying head of my British seatmate was straight in front of the window and I couldn’t see anything. So I just fastened my seatbelt and waited for the departure. Then it happened: one of the hand luggage cabins opened unnoticed and I imagined how the bag would drop down and behead the person underneath. Seeking for help I looked around but everybody still remained on their seats, even the stewardesses. Then one man noticed the cabin but he sat too far away to close it but our glances crossed and he pointed his finger at it. “Does he really want me to close it? It’s too late” I thought. Finally I decided to do it. I ripped off my seatbelt and dived for the open cabin. It closed immediately when the plane was lifting into the air and I stumbled and fell back to my seat.

Totally exhausted I closed my seatbelt and thought “Mc Giver couldn’t have done it better”.
